About Me

I am Chinese-American and I hail from sunny California. I appreciate the stochastic nature of British weather. My favorite aspects of my job involve interacting with my wonderful colleagues and research - working on projects myself, discussing colleagues' work, and teaching students how to assess data for themselves and interpret the implications of their results for policy.

Outside of academia, I have diverse interests: art, horology, music, numismatics, oenology, photography, and tropical fish. Before settling on the quantitative social sciences, I nearly ended up pursuing a career as a professional cellist. My longstanding interest in all aspects of wine, represented by my membership in the Wine Century Club (which requires having tasted at least 100 unique varietals). I'm now close to becoming a Double Century member (200 unique varietals). I collect antique US and cast Chinese cash coins and invest in cryptocurrencies. I make watches from time to time, and I still play cello as well as guitar. I raise endler-guppy hybrids and ricefish. I'm a huge tech lover, although my inherent focus on cybersecurity (some have called it paranoia) means I'm often not an early adopter.
